What are the commonly used tests for COVID-19?The most commonly used test to diagnose COVID-19 is the RT-PCR test. This test is very specific and sensitive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This test uses molecular technology to identify RNA/DNA genetic material from the virus. Swabs are used to collect specimens from the nose, throat or sputum and analyzed by a high level CLIA approved lab. A positive test means the person is actively infected with the virus. The test is rated at 96-100 % sensitive for detecting those with the virus when specimens are collected properly. It is considered the gold standard for testing. The Covid-19 Antibody test is a serologic test used to detect IgM and IgG antibodies developed by the body after exposure to the virus. IgM antibodies are the 1 st to appear and is indicative of a new infection. This response is followed by IgG antibodies which can take up to 4 weeks to appear. These tests are used primarily to confirm past exposure to the virus and are not used to diagnose active infection. Blood specimens are typically sent to a lab for analysis. The test has a sensitivity of 90% -95% for detecting an immune response to the virus. The COVID-19 Antigen test is a new test that looks for antigens or protein molecules on the surface of the virus. Like the RT-PCR test, it uses a nasal swab specimen for analysis . A positive test means there is active infection with the virus. The test is rated approximately 85% sensitive for detecting the virus. More recently, Rapid testing for COVID-19 have become available allowing for onsite testing with results available within 10 -20 minutes. While these onsite tests are more convenient, they may not be as accurate in detecting the virus resulting in a higher number of false negatives or false positive test results.

It is not used to diagnose active infection. Blood specimens are typically sent to a lab for analysis. A positve COVID antibody test does not neccessarily mean you have immunity to the virus.
